"Touching Grass" If you pay attention you will notice that common theme spread across nearly my entire 30 year plus artistic legacy. That theme is rooted in the intrinsic and instinctive feeling and belief that the most important aspect of being gifted with sentience is being grateful for the grand architecture & magical force of intelligent design...  I.E. The Universe that exists and will exist absent of the existence, influence or actions of human experience.  I.E.  "Mother Nature" Perfect Harmony, Heaven on Earth / in Universe already exists. My earliest vivid memories and emotions are all tied to the tranquility of how my mind, body and spirit reacted to being in nature in such a profound way.  Like before I was able to speak or express I was blessed to grasp and recognise how lucky I was to be alive and in tune with the natural environment.   It's not a mistake that for humans to remain in existence & "Healthy" we all require the same key conditions, Oxygen, Sunlight and Water. These same conditions extend to "most" living organic life. The Universe is perfected Chaos, but the sentient human experience seems to be the glitch or exception to that reality.  "Ignorance is Bliss" + "Your Reality is what you make it" These phrases are daunting to anyone who was born highly sensitive to energy with heightened awareness.   "When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things" The most precious things on this earth are Mother Nature and Childlike Wonder... Pure Innocence. To become an Adult by these standards means to desensitise your spirit and compromise your instinct and intuition to adapt & survive and ignore all the imperfect, unnatural, unbalanced and unfair realities created by other humans. The title of my first solo album references the mourning of losing utopia & being conscious and aware of what the centuries of humans that existed before me chose to do to create the societal "reality" we are all encouraged and pretty much forced to accept as the reality for the magical experience of being a sentient being. But we are all Human, We have to adapt to survive right, to not blindly accept and follow societal norms as truth and accept that reality is just immature adolescence.  "Your daydreaming is child like, Time to Grow up" Over the years as I aged and matured and did my best to navigate through a man made world, I never seemed to be able to desensitise myself enough to bury that initial intrinsic intuition I had before I even had a chance to be shaped or influenced by human expectations...   Heaven exists on earth already and somehow the majority of humans have been conditioned to no longer recognize it. So this theme of touching grass and returning to nature kept growing stronger which reflected in the art I created. 📖 Backstory:

The only person to visit me on the sacred mountain was my homie Simon from Los Angeles. I tried my hardest to explain how magical the place I was living at to my friends and tried to explain there was no photo or video I could share that would do it justice but everyone was busy or said they would visit later.

It was such a profound experience, it felt almost unreal not getting to share it with anyone...

Thankfully my homie Simon didn't hesitate.

This Documented Artifact was taken in the front yard of my house, on the first day Simon arrived. We were heading out to walk the mountain and he immediately saw a Deer just chilling and excited whispered

🗨️ "Dutch! let me take a photo of you before it runs away"

I told him

"don't worry... they are the homies! they won't run away because we've already bonded on a spiritual level"

He laughed and made me quickly pose for photo....

A Moment in time captured.

Moments after, the Deer galloped back into the forest so it was a good thing he didn't let ramble and end up missing this photo haha.

As we walked up the mountain, I gave him the backstory and lore about night of spiritual bonding with all the deer in that forest...

As I often sat alone at this very spot, my mind would wonder and think about all the previous human interactions that took place here, forever lost to time, witnessed only by the intelligent design surrounding this man made object... 📖Backstory:

You ever wondered what would have been soundtrack to an asteroid traveling through space, breaching earths atmosphere and traveling through the sky before making impact on land around 66 million years ago?

I have, the day I visited my neighbors house down the street to have him look at my malfunctioning tomos mo-ped... I caught this T-rex chilling out of the corner of my eye and pivoted to an awkward and uncomfortable position to capture that moment haha. Later that day, while working on my (at the time) upcoming album "Traversal" I remember the homie Scott Xylo sent me drums for a collab. 9 times out of 10, I'm usually gonna just mangle and chop a sample but this time, I couldn't get the thought of how life on earth, including the dinosaurs must have felt seeing a giant asteroid pummeling towards them. I wanted to attempt to capture how the soundtrack for that process would have sounded which meant, no samples... I just had to play what I felt...

At the last minute, I cut the track from the original digital release of Traversal, which released 12.31.15 and a few months later decided to post in Soundcloud.

It wasn't until Grand Garden Records approached me to release the Cassette version of "Traversal" that I decided, I could finally re-sequence this album in the way I intended to be heard. So I pulled tracks from digital version off the album, and added a few tracks to the cassette version including this one.

Before I knew I was going to officially become an Artist/Emcee/Producer for the next 3 decades, I started my journey in 1995, alone in my room making beats for fun on Casio Keyboard that had a loop and record function that I would record freestyles w/ my neighbors, friends over on a crappy Karaoke Machine (Casio in the photo is not the one I had) - I Still have all those casio beats as well as all those early freestyles on cassette and recently digitized them tho ;)

Maybe you weren't born yet, maybe you weren't a music nerd that was equally super invested in the golden era of 90's hip-hop both equally as a super fan as well as an official artist. Maybe you were? but just in case i'll break down some objective hip-hop history timeline.

After the very public beef and deaths of Biggie Smalls & 2pac that sparked the East Coast vs West Coast fiasco. The energy "main stream" shifted from fun, vulnerable, experimental & diverse and ushered in the super unrealistic, ultra materialistic Jiggy Era spearheaded by Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs. Thankfully at the time, while this was happening. There was still a balance in the mainstream i.e. De La Soul - "Stakes is High" / Blackeyedpea's "Falling Up" (don't get me started on how quickly they became biggest hypocrites in hip-hop history haha) and there was many more. Unless you were a fan of hip-hop during that era to the point of never missing an episode of Rap city or Yo! MTV Raps, You might not be aware that there was A time, Records and Artists you would now consider underground or experimental had an equal amount of TV Airtime. The Jiggy / Party era began to phase that out (at least in video / fm radio form) Late 1997 & 1998 Clear-channel monopolised "urban" FM radio across the states, playing the same "Popular" songs over and over and over by proxy and by design force feeding perceived popularity. While this sucked to witness, The rise of the Independent / Underground Era was sent into hyper drive. W/ access to College / Public Access Radio + the internet w/ places like Sandboxautomatic, Atak distribution. hiphopsite.com, etc... There was zero shortage of dope and diverse music.

Which brings us to the image and most important history lesson relevant to this artifact. 1998, Swizz Beatz steps out onto the scene via the Famous DMX "Ruff Ryder's Anthem" - A Banger but also a cheap casio, sample free beat. Music industry takes note: Wait... we can make hit records without having to pay for sample clearance?!?! Let's do that from now on 90% of the time... Combined with Clear Channel Payola Strategy the future of "mainstream" hip-hop that the general population was exposed to that wasn't a super fan, digging for substance became a water down, hyper materialistic hellscape (compared to what was made equally publicly available prior)...
