Combining manipulated satellite imagery with sonified data sets, this limited Refraction edition of LXD-1, LXD-Refracted, reimagines layers of complicity and non-compliance implied in surveillance, data extraction, and climate breakdown. The interactive, asynchronous convergence of audio-visual layers, when fully activated, begins to invoke the sensation of an accelerated lifetime’s planetary flux.
Using data sets commencing from the artist’s year of birth sonified with custom tools developed by the artist and accompanied by deliberately decimated images, can you decipher the territory implied by the (refracted) map? Beckoning viewers to confront their role in a world increasingly dependent on inscrutable data flows while undergoing profound ecological transformation, LXD invokes the intersection of individual agency and collective responsibility amidst the ceaseless flux of our shared biosphere and the emerging technological systems reshaping it — with or without our consent.

Words allow ideas to endure through time. An AI was asked to create a new language and write secret messages to its future self(s). The decision was made not to decipher the messages but to keep them encrypted as is. The AI messages are made in aluminium to last so that they can be deciphered in far away futures.

An unforgettable event at the edge of digital culture in collaboration with TOWNS, Celo, Arweave, Galxe, Livepeer, Tweed & Chanoirs.
Refraction took over Berlin's Panke Culture this past April for two nights of experimental and immersive audiovisual performances. Crossing both geographies and genres, and mixing DJing, live sets, and everything in between, and there was a palpable buzz in this northern corner of the German capital. The music ran the gamut from the fantastical techno of Hungarian artist The Allegorist to the rapidfire rhymes of Kenyan rapper MC Yallah. Eddington Again brought the hazy funk of his native LA to Wedding, while Bungalovv offered up corroded electronics that harkened back to his project's start in Buenos Aires. Held together less by aesthetics and more by sensibility, these two evenings were a masterclass in programming built around principles of curiosity and artistic adventure.
What a night, NYC. Early in April Refraction returned to Public Records, NY with our friends from Towns.
The dance floor was lit up by BBC Radio 1 host, DJ, and producer Benji B, musician and DJ Athena Yasaman, the contemplative dancy vibes of 063N13, and filled with global disco bangers by Seance Centre & Prince Language on the second floor.
Rick Silva’s ‘Totality’ artwork, Refraction’s latest drop for Refract Pass holders, debuted at Public Records, as well as Metamedia, an interactive chain-agnostic, multi-layer format featuring works from several artists and envisioned by Noah Pred.
Attendees were able to pick up merch from our limited edition drop with Crowdmuse and Harmony-NY, a one-off long-sleeved tee spotlighting all the visual artists and musicians showcased during the night.

A digital monostitch (one-line poem) fusing legible verse with semi-asemic binary code. Composed of words extracted from the poem "Ten Year Challenge," first published in 2019 and reprinted in Stiles' book "Technelegy," which investigates the rise of blockchain poetics and the evolution of language beyond human voice and printed page. Part of Stiles' ongoing literary experiments using poetry as a lens to explore how technological transformations are changing what it means to be human.

This animation brings the beholder into an immersive and mysterious face-to-face with Nephel, a first encounter with the main character of Nephel's Dream. Nephel’s Dream (by Alexis Olin & dOP, 2022) is a visual-musical tale that reflects the vision of a fantastic and oneiric universe through the heroes’ eyes, a child called Nephel, during his long journey across 25 days and nights onboard a magical train. This artwork is divided into 25 visual chapters, from day 1 to day 25, that are matching the 25 songs of the Nephel’s Dream album, composed, produced and performed by the electronic group dOP. The Nephel's Dream collection and project, created in collaboration with the art tech studio Lezar, is an apology of the fusion of digital and physical mediums, complementary in the creative process and offering art new possibilities & experiences. The physical manifestation of a memory, or engram, consists of clusters of brain cells active when a specific memory was formed. The aim of the Activated Engrams collection is to materialize the strongest memories collected during the past 10 years of club life and tours.
Glass appears as the perfect vehicle for displaying those memories, like it would display a hologram.
The pictures representing the memories are stripped down to their most pure extracted form, a few pixels, and we can see them evolving from one to one in a blurry constellation of electric reminiscence.

Daance Dange Daice is a video montage of AI generated dance images that connect into an expanded display of alienated joy and celebration, as if peering into another world’s party. Originally commissioned for Refraction Festival x Miami Art Week, this collection features 225 distinct works created to align with the rhythms of the dance music while reflecting our connection with each other after a long period of isolation. The title, Daance Dange Daice, comes from AI generated text anomalies of the word “Dance”.

Jimmy Edgar is a multidisciplinary conceptual artist whose works encompass sound, sculpture, digital images, and blockchain technology. Deeply inspired by the meta physical phases of matter, he explores the materiality of physical and digital domains through his works.
“Visual expression always felt to me as my foundation. Music came so naturally to me that it seemed to be a means for me to be involved with visual media. I’m driven to creatively and technologically innovate within the harmony of both.” - Jimmy Edgar
‘Monument’ is a testament to the Obelisk in culture. The work reimagines what these objects might look like in the future — and speaks to the current state of digital objects today.
Jimmy has graciously donated the work to raise funds for Refraction. All proceeds go to our summer programming as we continue to experiment with ways to redistribute economies across artist communities, and champion diverse curation around the world.
