The Cihuateteo are the spirits of women who died in childbirth. Considered to be as fierce and strong as warriors who died in battle, they return on five separate days each year to the mortal world and act as powerful malevolent forces - stealing babies, causing madness and inducing seizures in humans. Offerings should be made to them to avoid their wrath during these days.

The Shug Monkey is a creature that haunts the streets of Cambridgeshire, England. It has the body of a jet-black shaggy sheepdog and the face of a monkey with staring; luminous eyes. Sometimes it shuffles along on its hind legs and at other times it runs on all fours. For reasons known only to it, it is said to haunt an overgrown and little-used lane called Slough Hill in the parish of West Wratting – although it reportedly has not been sighted anywhere at all since the end of World War 2.

Behold Tawaret, Mistress of Pure Water, the mighty Egyptian goddess of childbirth and fertility. She has the form of the ferocious hippopotamus, the paws and talons of a lionness and the tail of the savage nile crocodile. She protects innocent babies and pregnant women from harm and destroys those that would harm them, tearing their immortal souls into shreds.

The Mapinguari dwells deep in the Amazon rainforest, and is thought to be a human shaman who has undergone a terrible transformation. It has a single eye and a gaping mouth on its stomach, which emits a terrifying shriek. It also has backwards feet to confuse trackers and lead them astray in the thick jungle.

The Singha is a fierce temple guardian from Thailand, bestowed with the divine responsibility to protect sacred buildings as well as members of the royal family. Usually made of stone, they have the ability to spring to life if they observe a breach of conduct.

Feng is an edible monster who resembles a squirming lump of meat with a great rolling eye. He grows back as quickly as he is eaten, but that doesn't mean he's OK with it on any level.

The mischievous Tanuki! These shape-shifting tricksters delight in pranks and shenanigans. If you're ever in a Japanese forest and hear music, watch out! It could be a tanuki drumming out rhythms on his magical belly-drum. Don't follow the sound or you might get lost.

This is Quetzalcoatl, a feathered serpent with the colourful plumage of the quetzal bird and the sinuous body of a serpent. Revered as a god of wind and wisdom, Quetzalcoatl is quick to show his displeasure with any mortal who doesn't pay him due respect.

Hakutaku is a mythical white bovine with many watchful eyes along its flanks and back. It enjoys eating the bad dreams of sleeping humans, and can be encouraged into properties by leaving windows open and hanging up a picture of a beautiful white cow. Hakutaku takes this as a form of encouragement and will drift in through open windows at night to eat up nightmares.

Adnoartina is a wise and powerful deity and a sacred ancestral being who takes the form of a lizard. She is the guardian of Uluru, the famous Aboriginal landmark, and it is said that she stained its rocks and soil red with the shed blood of her enemies.

This enormous Hungarian bird is capable of destroying whole armies and eating their entire stock of horses. Despite its enormous talons and sharp beak, it appears as a guardian and protector to pregnant women. Hungarian women used to carry falcons inside their yurts during childbirth to honour the great Turul.

The Basket Woman, also known as Dzunuḵ̓wa, is a fearsome giant who captures children and brings them home in her enormous woven basket to devour them at her leisure. She is said to make haunting, whistling calls that sound like the wind through the trees.
