The image shows a lake on Mars with a blue surface on a brown background. According to scientists, there were once rivers and lakes on Mars. To this day, there is enough water on the planet, but only in the form of ice. In 2018, a subglacial lake on Mars was discovered, located at a depth of 1.5 km under the ice of the Southern Polar Cap, about 20 km wide. This became the first known permanent body of water on Mars. However, repeated analysis of the Mars Express radar data and laboratory experiments have shown that the so-called "lakes" can be hydrated and cold deposits, including clay, minerals containing metals, and salty ice. Eridania is considered to be another large lake on Mars. It alone contained more water than all the other lakes of the Red Planet combined. Scientists suggest that the heyday of Eridania occurred 3.7 billion years ago. At first it was one large body of water, which, as the water level decreased, crumbled into several isolated lakes, and then disappeared altogether.
