“The U.S. is trying to disconnect from Ethereum," that’s what Joe Lubin the CEO of Consensys said in today’s conversation. He was talking about those in power trying to unplug Ethereum from the citizens.
The SEC is going after Kraken, Coinbase, Uniswap and Metamask. They’re trying to turn every non-custodial wallet into a broker-dealer.
We brought on Joe Lubin, a crypto OG and CEO of Consensys the company behind a number of massive crypto projects including the popular Metamask wallet, and Matt Corva, the General Counsel at Consensys, leading the charge against the SEC
Joe and Matt are producing evidence that the SEC is coming after Ethereum itself. Sending discovery requests to Ethereum core developers, threatening their employers - pushing a coordinated effort to claim Ether is a security so they can control it.
So Consensys is taking them to court to settle the issue. If they’re successful it’ll be the first time we get a clear court ruling that Ether is a commodity and not a security.

Su Zhu & Kyle Davies are renowned investors in the crypto space, and in this episode of State of the Nation, the Three Arrows Capital co-founders come on Bankless to discuss ETH as an investment, and more broadly, Ethereum as an ecosystem. They describe themselves as 'on-chain' maximalists, and we dive into how Ethereum boasts impressive on-chain metrics and its strong, fundamental narrative.
Big money likes productive assets, and ETH is proving itself to be highly productive as a capital asset. We discuss the flippening of Ether & Bitcoin, and the opportunity for it in this cycle. Su & Kyle make it clear that institutions are coming around on Ethereum, and the scope of the ecosystem is such that any EVM-compatible (composable with the Ethereum Virtual Machine) is in turn bullish for ETH.
Ethereum has painted six weekly green candles in a row and is indisputably red-hot at the time of this recording. Despite the bullish narrative, it remains difficult to properly measure the magnitude of this move. The inevitable unknowns do not frighten Three Arrows Capital, who explore denominating net worth in Ether. All in all, they leave us with some of the most bullish projections we have ever seen on the Bankless podcast.

51 - 2020 Reflections on Crypto and Beyond

Vitalik wrote this post from Singapore, noting that 2020 was a dynamic year, in which we faced “humanity’s first boss-level enemy since 1945.” However, it was also a year that brought much hope in areas like transportation, medicine, AI, and blockchains.
We have observed a transition in the Political economy from physical to digital – 2020 served as a high-octane accelerant for these changes. A key piece of this change is shifting emphasis from physical private goods to digital public goods. This transition requires creative solutions to the challenges of effective governance.
The phrase “digital nationalism” refers humanity’s recent tendency to polarize and how this extends to the internet. Both Bitcoin and Ethereum have undergone great schisms, resulting in hard forks like BCH and ETC. These phenomena in the rising political economy will likely continue.
Vitalik walks through the tricky relationship between our financial and non-monetary social motivations. Culture and narrative can be incredibly powerful tools for innovation, but altruistic people are not the only ones with access to these things.
Vitalik concludes with thoughts on the Big X - Big Government, Big Business, Big Tech, etc. This multidisciplinary “dense jungle” is populated by a variety of powerful groups with dynamic interrelationships, and blockchains & cryptocurrencies are set up to play a vital role.

Bankless Podcast #60 - SEC & DeFi
Guest: Hester Peirce
Hester Peirce is one of five SEC Commissioners and has been a knowledgable advocate for crypto as the world works out how to regulate the budding industry. The main goals of the Security & Exchange Commission are threefold – to protect investors; maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets; and facilitate capital formation. The SEC governs far more than crypto, but increasing attention is coming to the space as capital gravitates into it.
Regulating crypto begins with officially establishing the asset class, e.g. currencies, capital assets, commodities, equities, et al. The next step is giving these assets legitimacy in existing financial institutions through exchange-traded products like a Bitcoin ETF.
Below the base money layer, there exists Layer 0, the social layer. Layer 0 must be willing to officially play ball with the cryptoeconomy, and that's what makes regulators like Hester so important. The net optimization of these layers makes for an unequivocally better society: a more inclusive, equitable, and efficient one.
Hester believes in governing principles, not specific technologies. It's important here to remember the three main goals of the SEC. The value propositions of crypto – providing a permissionless, trustless, and verifiable means to transact – are in accord with the values of a free state. The role of government is to encourage and protect mutually beneficial, voluntary engagement among citizens.
Although the harmony between crypto's core values and those of a free state are readily apparent to a seasoned Bankless listener, the rest of Layer 0 must still be convinced. Crypto is a frontier with infinite possibilities, and effectively regulating such an ecosystem is a massive task. However, based on this conversation, there seem to be many reasons to be optimistic about the future of Crypto & DeFi regulation.

Algorithmic Stablecoins, with Dan Elitzer
Dan Elitzer recently co-founded Nascent (nascent.xyz), a venture capital company that is deep into the weeds in some of the most experimental projects in the Ethereum ecosystem.
In the 2nd half of 2020, some of the coolest experimental projects have been Algorithmic, Uncollateralized Stablecoins.
These are stablecoins without dollars in a bank, or without crypto in a vault. They are completely backed by financial incentives.... and faith in those incentives.

Learn about a concept DeFi Dad recently posted about where you'd use TokenSets as a DeFi stop-loss. The idea is that if you want exposure to a TokenSet trading strategy (ideally a Robo Set) and if that criteria for a rebalance from ETH to a stablecoin is nearly met, you can buy a Set like ETH 20 Moving Average Crossover Yield and allow the Set to act like a stop-loss, selling out of ETH if the price were to fall.
Be aware there's always risk with smart contracts when you use a DeFi app like TokenSets and you should also think about the possibility that ETH could draw down in price, cause the Set to rebalance from 100% ETH to 100% cUSDC, and then move upwards before the Set can buy back ETH, meaning you're now buying back ETH at a higher price. That being said, check out the historical performance of ETH20SMACO Yield by going to determine whether this might work for you. It's much simpler than setting a stop-loss because you can leave your ETH in this Set in the hope it might outperform holding ETH.

How to Use TokenSets as a DeFi Stop-Loss
Be aware there's always risk with smart contracts when you use a DeFi app like TokenSets and you should also think about the possibility that ETH could draw down in price, cause the Set to rebalance from 100% ETH to 100% cUSDC, and then move upwards before the Set can buy back ETH, meaning you're now buying back ETH at a higher price. That being said, check out the historical performance of ETH20SMACO Yield by going to determine whether this might work for you. It's much simpler than setting a stop-loss because you can leave your ETH in this Set in the hope it might outperform holding ETH.
