The old Wrigley manor sits atop the hillside overlooking Avalon. Before this trip, I never knew about William Wrigley Jr.'s dedication to protecting Catalina.

On the way to Pebbly Beach, up the road from Avalon, you could see a cruise ship anchored off the coast, its lifeboats repurposed to ferry visitors to and from the shore.

On our last day, I got up early, eager to see the island bathed in morning light. The historic casino greeted me as I left Hamilton Cove.

As the sky took on its evening hues, the pier bustled with fishermen and tourists.

As the sun begins to dip behind the hills, the harbor starts to glow.

Switchbacks wind through the hills just outside of Avalon, offering stunning views of the town's beach club and historic casino around every bend.

The structure is made of white concrete mixed with local aggregate. The surface of the structure was sandblasted to reveal the texture and color provided by the island's stone.

From the top of the memorial, you are met with a stunning view through the canyon out to the sea.

The Wrigley Memorial & Botanical Gardens was a wonderful stop on our trip. Catalina's temperate climate allows a global variety of plants to thrive.

The architecture where we stayed was captivating. I could have photographed it for the entire trip; a new delight awaited around every corner.

From our room, you could see private moorings, a rock-strewn beach, and a singular stretch of lawn.

Hamilton Cove sits perched on a hillside—steep roads intersected by steep staircases connect the private community.

Our overnight lodging was in Hamilton Cove, down the road from the historic casino. The white stucco and orange tiles accentuated the Mediterranean ambiance.

After longer than expected, we reached Avalon and began to take in the magic the small town offered.

Dark and choppy, the ocean rocked our ship. Some found their sea legs; others found a bucket.

The jetsam-clogged jet flooded the lower deck. As we went along, the crew continually mopped the spray back into the sea.

Due to our slow speed, there were occasional maneuvers to avoid larger ships that would normally have been passed with ease.

The sea was rough when we departed. Jetsam lodged in the jet of our boat, and we made slow progress to Santa Catalina island.
